Activity Sampling

Random sampling vs. subjective sampling.  Which is better?

For Instructors: Do you have to pass code for this activity?

For Students: Have you read the Instruction for Participation page?

The Problem

Random sampling is an important technique used in statistics.  How do you ensure the sample you choose has a good representation of the target population?  Why does a random mechanism work?  In this activity, you will use your best judgment by selecting your very own subjective sample that you think will represent the population the best.  Then the computer will choose the same number of cases at random.  Your results will be compared with the random sample.  Can you beat the random mechanism?

Objectives

1.  To learn the terms population and sample and the representation of a population with a sample.

2.  To learn the technique of random sampling and compare with your very own subjective sampling.

3.  To learn the difference between population parameters and sample statistics.

Key Concepts

Population, sample, parameters, statistic, random sampling, subjective sampling, bias, unbiased and representativeness.

Required Equipment

  • Activity pass code (provided by the instructor)

  • Internet connection
