Instructors' Guide for Facilitating Activity

Activity Left_Right_Hand: Are you left handed or right handed?

Required Equipment

     • Computers for each student to conduct the online data collection
     • A pass code for this activity (If you do not have this, please register for a pass code.)

Activity

This activity is designed to help students to learn the concepts of independent/dependent events and conditional probability as well as multiplicative rule.

Suggested Approach and Some Tips for Facilitating This Activity

1. Describe the activity as a scenario.
Are you left or right handed? When you intertwine your fingers, which thumb is on the top? If you are left handed, is your left thumb on the top? and vise versa. Is the ''thumb on the top'' independent or dependent on whether you are ''Left handed or right handed''?

2. Decide to have the class to
  • participate in the data collection (Go To Step 3)

                                   or

  • Use the data collected by other classes (Go To Step 4)
3. Engage students in the data measurement and data collection.
  • Ask the question "Are you left handed or right handed" and have them raise their hands.
  • Ask them to clasp their hands together and intertwine their fingers to observe which thumb is on the top.
  • Direct students to "add data" page for this activity to enter their data.
    • Go to Data Entry
    • Select Activity Left_Right_Hand
    • Click on "ADD DATA"
    • You need to provide the students the Activity      Pass Code
4. Direct students to the Data Download page for this activity.
  • On the Activity 'Left_Right_Hand' page, click on "Data Download".
  • There are several selection criteria available. Please tell students which criterion to be used. You may choose all cases or subsets of data.
  • Please ask students to save the data before opening it. A convenient location for saving the data is on the Desktop-The default data is named "mydata.dat". The data values are separated by space (Space delimited)
5. Direct students to analyze the data.
  • You may use the software at your local computer lab.
  • You may use the online software "statcrunch" at http://www.statcrunch.com/. First time users are required to login and create an ID and password. Please ask the students to write down their ID and password for future use.
  • Direct students to input the data and ask them to follow your instructions.
